The Wish List: Gina’s T-Rex Sweater on Brooklyn Nine-Nine

It happened! Gina from Brooklyn Nine-Nine wore one of the Coach T-Rex sweaters and I couldn’t be happier as I’ve been talking about this for over a year now. b99The Coach T-Rex motif first appeared last year at New York Fashion Week for the 2016 Spring/Summer collection and this version of the sweater was suggested here at TV Ate My Wardrobe as the ideal Gina attire.b99-ginaCoach now produces a variety of T-Rex styles including the knitted original in several colors, the varsity sweatshirt (as seen on Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and a crew sweater with a patch logo. I prefer the latter two and on a particularly rainy and blustery day in New York a couple of weeks ago I maybe popped into a Coach store to say hi to this sweater collection and wondered if I could justify spending that much money on one item (sadly I couldn’t). A sale purchase perhaps. img_7912As this is my first post back after my honeymoon it is serendipitous that this item showed up so soon after this trip and on the character I thought it was ideal for. I maybe lost my shit at the B99 cold open. Okay I definitely lost my shit.

The below picture was taken on a far sunnier day than the shop visit and now I have bathroom decor dreams.img_8518Other recent purveyors of this style have included Winona Ryder at the recent Coach NYFW show and Michael B. Jordan during Comic-Con.

Be sure to keep an eye out for other future wearers as I’m sure I will post about them either here or as part of the TV Ate My Wardrobe newsletter (which will be returning very soon).

Best of the 2018 SAG Awards: Bold Color and Florals

More SAG Awards red carpet treats to kick-start your week. For everything that sparkles head here, below you will find a lot of florals, some strong color, plenty of couple goals and a pair that made my shipper heart all the happier. What better way to start the second part of this round-up than with Mary Steenburgen in forest green with a floral sandals peeping out from the bottom.

Why yes I did get a little teary at the end of the recent Good Place. I love that Steenburgen and Ted Danson are currently starring in two of my favorite comedies at the moment. Velvet isn’t just for suits as Felicity Huffman demonstrates in a plunging Monsoori. William H. Macy won for Shameless and this pair continues to win my heart. Everything about this shot makes my heart feel fuller. Looking great to boot; Chelsea Peretti wears Needle and Thread, Jordan Peele is in Valentino. Sterling K. Brown and Ryan Michelle Bathe have become permanent fixtures on here during award season. From tuxedo twinning at the Golden Globes to this delicate Germy Maalouf floral bodice gown. Brown won Best Actor for This is Us and looks cool af in Armani. Check out young Randall’s amazing tux here.

And he continues to give great speeches.
This is Us won Ensemble in a Drama in what was one of the big surprises of the night. While I think at times this show can be super emotionally manipulative (as the tears stream down my face), the acting is always top notch. Mandy Moore, Chrissy Metz and Susan Kelechi Watson are all in the same shade of blue, which can’t be a coincidence.

As far as speeches go this is also a very good one as Milo Ventimiglia makes sure he thanks the production team from top to bottom. Striking a stylish tone in white and matching her TV family on the sartorial scale is Tracee Ellis Ross in Ralph & Russo. And Gucci continues to deliver stylish whimsy as demonstrated by Brie Larson in this pretty floral number. Thankfully Jane the Virgin returns this Friday (January 26), but in the meantime feast your eyes on Yael Grobglas in shoulder ruffles and Gina Rodriguez mixing delicate florals with a severe dark bodice in Rasario Resort. Orangy lips to match the orange flowers on Zoe Kazan’s Miu Miu dress and this is a great look from H to T (always channeling my inner Tyra). Last Jedi fave, Kelly Marie Tran looks stunning in Mary Katrantzou. There are so many ways to do fancy florals. This is a knockout.Queen Ann Dowd looking super regal in Escada. Bow down. A jumpsuit? A dress? Either way Sally Hawkins in chevron Dior Haute Couture is a wacky treat on this SAG red carpet.Big Little Lies sandwich of happiness.
Be still my shipper heart. Exhibit A.

Exhibit B. Great lipstick too, Winona.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

Another week featuring award season shenanigans, NYFW and the blessing that has been the Black Panther press tour. The gift that keeps on giving.

The new Americans artwork for the final season was unveiled this week and it is just as stylistically stylized as the previous five years. Always such a visual pleasure. At Michael Kors, Blake Lively leaned into Valentine’s Day with heart embellished Louboutins and a fabulous red PVC trench, Zendaya mixed athleisure with a sleeveless duster and Emily Blunt is a pattern clashing queen.

The show itself was a lot more eclectic than you would normally get from this designer, but I am a big fan of the Agatha Christie influence. And the leopard print. Stranger Things teen Caleb McLaughlin has been one of the shining stars in menswear on the red carpet over the last couple of years, putting a lot of adults to sartorial shame. McLaughlin looks like he is having fun with fashion so it doesn’t come as a surprise to see him at the Phillip Lim 3.1 show. Here he is with Zosia Mamet; I love her turtleneck/jacket combo.

How to brighten up your day in one step; wear yellow. Jessica Williams looks fabulous going into to the Tibi NYFW show.Dee Rees strikes another ladysuit win in this floral metallic number at the WGA Awards.More florals to fall for with Chelsea Peretti in N°21.

Earlier this week, I watched Get Out for the first time since it came out at the cinema and knowing what is going to happen makes you realize just how layered every line is. I am so happy to see Jordan Peele getting recognized for his work including winning at the WGA for Best Original Screenplay.I am really excited to see Annihilation and the cast is part of the reason why. Delightful dress twirling fun with Tessa Thompson and Gina Rodriguez at the premiere. The Call Me By Your Name promo train keeps on coming, much to my delight. Want to buy the house in the movie? Well now you can. A lot more affordable is the new issue of GQ, which Timothée Chalamet is the cover star of. The whole vibe is moody, emo fun including this shot. That Saint Laurent jacket jumps on the covet list.

This comment from Armie Hammer is very cute. I’m gonna be sad when the CMBYN promotion is done and dusted.

“Timmy had research to do. For me, it was mostly: Do you know how to ride a bike? The day I got there, I barged in on a piano lesson and was, like, ‘As soon as you’re done, we’re hanging out.’ From that moment on, we were together all the time.”Black Panther is now out and we have one more week of this fabulous press tour to enjoy. The film is fantastic, as are the costumes and you can read my interview with Ruth E. Carter here.

The turtleneck/jacket trend continues to be doing big things. Especially when it involves Chadwick Boseman sporting this floral Musika Frere suit. Also at the same New York screening Letitia Wright makes a difficult Coach ensemble look fabulous. That jacket has a kooky ’70s vibe, which is totally in my wheelhouse.

Wright’s performance as Shuri is one of the standout performances in a film of standout performances. I hope we’re going to see a lot more of her in the Marvel universe.Lupita Nyong’o covers the “Culture of Hair Issue” of Allure. The cover is striking, but this shot is really fun, which is why I picked it. In the piece Lupita discusses her hair history, the larger cultural implications, the products she uses and what it was like working on Black Panther:

“On set, it was just such an inspirational experience because so much thought was put into this film, and every single aspect of it was rich and beautiful and just arresting, actually. To see this aspirational African world that actually becomes an example for the whole wide world was spellbinding. We were all very much aware that we were in something extremely special.”

For more in-depth conversation about the celebration of natural black hair in Black Panther I would highly recommend reading this interview with Camille Friend over at The CutThere are no damsels in distress in Black Panther, the age range of the leading women varies and they aren’t just there to be a love interest. Shuri (Letitia Wright), Romonda (Angela Bassett), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) all have agency; it is incredible seeing four black women taking center stage like this. This Essence cover celebrates the Black Panther cast and this is a powerful image.

Best of the 2018 Oscars Red Carpet: Bold Color and Pattern

After months of awards shows, the big one is here! And while the show itself was a bit of a snooze overall, the red carpet delivered on the bold color front. After the mostly black Golden Globe ensembles, the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements were present in the form of pins and speeches.

Culminating in Frances McDormand’s incredible speech.

If you want to know more about what an “inclusion rider” is, Caroline Framke has this covered here.

For all things Oscars fashion highlights there will be a couple of posts going up today. No, it isn’t sexist to ask what designer an attendee is wearing.I pretty much screamed with joy when I saw photos of Jennifer Garner when she arrived. This is some Sydney Bristow era level of amazing in Atelier Versace.Bubblegum pink is a look for the Oscars and holy shit does Viola Davis score with Michael Kors Collection in this shade. And she somehow manages to not look saccharine.
My favorite all-time Oscar look is Michelle Williams in mustard yellow Vera Wang. It is not surprising to discover that Greta Gerwig in custom floral Rodarte in this particular shade is an instant win. I love everything about this, right down to her lipstick color. This is the dress of a winner; Allison Janney is serving up so much sleeve drama in Reem Acra. How to wear a bow and make it look like art; the Nicole Kidman in Armani Privé story. One of the highlights of the evening was the Tiffany Haddish/Maya Rudolph presenting pair. PT Anderson you better make a movie with these amazing women. Haddish wore the Alexander McQueen frock she bought for the Girls Trip premiere, which she also wore when she hosted SNL. The Ugg slippers are a nice touch.

Maya Rudolph’s crimson Valentino frock looks particularly great in motion as she walks on the stage. And on the red carpet Tiffany Haddish looks like royalty in a traditional Eritrean Zuria princess gown, as s tribute to her late father.Sadly neither Daniel Kaluuya nor Timothée Chalamet won Best Actor, but they did seem to be having a good time on the red carpet. Kaluuya mixed things up in brown Brunello Cucinelli and Timothée Chalamet went the nearly all-white approach in Berluti. Armie Hammer couldn’t make the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday because he was sick. Thanks to modern medicine he got into this velvet Armani suit and also managed to fire a hot dog cannon. Elizabeth Chambers also wears Armani in another fabulous asymmetric gown on the night.I finally started watching One Day at a Time, you guys were right, it is amazing. And Rita Moreno took things to new fashion heights last night by wearing the same dress she wore when she won an Oscar for West Side Story in 1962.The King of Wakanda isn’t going to wear just a regular tux to the Oscars. Chadwick Boseman has shown exactly how to do menswear during the Black Panther promo tour and beyond. On Saturday it was polka dot Burberry, at the Oscars it was Givenchy. Kelly Marie Tran showed the not so glamorous side of Oscar fashion on Instagram. I love her. And she looks fantastic in plunging Jenny Packham.  Betty Gabriel has been a style star this award season and she went big at the Oscars in a dress that is part ethereal, part sheer sexiness in Tony Ward.Winner of Best Original Screenplay Jordan Peele wore fire engine red to the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, but went with something more traditional at the Oscars in Calvin Klein. And Chelsea Peretti shows velvet isn’t just for tuxedo jackets. I have a new Elio shirt I want to add to my collection. James Ivory wears Elio on his chest and won Best Adapted Screenplay for Call Me by Your Name. Edited to add details of where you too can acquire an Elio shirt.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

Pink, patterns and things that sparkle are all on the “Out of the Box” agenda this week. Despite the overcast view from my window, I am so ready for all things spring fashion.

Emmy nomination campaigning has begun; new shows are being promoted while other stars are celebrating the end of their long-running series. Plus, there is the 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, checking in with Harry Styles on tour and some magazine covers.  My resolution to not buy a new issue until I have read the previous one has not panned out well. *looks at the unread stack and weeps*The women of American Horror Story give great pattern clashing while standing together at a recent FYC event—this is technically last week, but whatever. Sarah Paulson and Leslie Grossman both in animal print Carolina Herrera, while Adina Porter is in a fabulous geometric pattern frock from the Tracee Ellis Ross collection.

Panel attire is something I have discussed a lot of the years here on the blog and you can really go in a lot of different directions. What the AHS ladies have done is coordinate without being too matchy matchy. Killing Eve is very much on my To Watch list; created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and starring Sandra Oh and Jodi Comer. Here they are attending the 1st Cannes International Series Festival to promote the show.

All three looks are perfect for the French setting (I won’t be using the word chic, because Reynolds Woodcock); Waller-Bridge in wide-legged pants and caped sleeve double-breasted ladysuit, a floral jumpsuit for Comer and Oh wears a mix of black tulle and fur. There is a mix of romance and whimsy across the board. Also taking the pink suit to the next level is Busy Philipps in velvet Anaïs Jourden to match the Three Olives Rosé Vodka she is sipping, as part of an endorsement deal. And if you haven’t read Allie Jones’ excellent profile of Philipps from last week then what are you waiting for?The pink suit theme continues with Adam Rippon, looking incredibly sharp (even without socks) at the GLAAD Media Awards.Obsessed with everything Queer Eye and the Fab Five at the moment—including this wonderful collection of reactions from Reddit at The Cut. It is honestly so great to see something so positive on TV and all over my Instagram feed. Karamo Brown also did the black shirt/bow tie combo, which works really well with this jacquard three piece stunner.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine won best comedy—Rosa’s coming out as bisexual storyline has been a highlight of the season—and Stephanie Beatriz is deservedly holding the award. This B99 quote from Beatriz’s speech is worth repeating:

“Every time someone steps up and says who they are, the world becomes a better and more interesting place.”I am on a self-imposed stripe buying ban until June (which is also part of a bet) so instead I have been buying a lot of polka dots. Luckily for me, polka dots are big this spring in stores and on the red carpet; Chelsea Peretti’s frock looks perfect for cocktails, dancing and celebrating media that is inclusive in its representation of the LGBTQ+ community.

For the full list of winners head here. The Scandal farewell tour is in full swing (the series finale is next week) and while I have dipped in and out of these last few seasons, I am excited to see how it will all end for Olivia Pope.

Kerry Washington combines the pink and sparkly trends in a super romantic Erdem on The Tonight Show with a big dash of ’70s inspired disco hair courtesy of hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew.Let’s take a moment to see what Harry Styles is wearing on tour. You guessed it; another Gucci stunner. And it’s pink and sparkly! Very on trend.

At the London date fans Ksenia Kulikova and Luna Riedel organized a massive light up rainbow tribute during “Sweet Creature.” Kulikova and Riedel run the London Rainbow Project and you can read more about this amazing moment at Teen Vogue.Another pink jacket! And for Marie Claire’s fifth annual Fresh Faces issue they have picked five actresses who represent why we should be excited by what is going on in Hollywood right now.

Each look is super colorful, Issa Rae gets the purple treatment and is serving up some ’80s office to the bar outfit realness in Céline. All five covers are fabulous—for Sophie Turner, Yara Shahidi, Riley Keough and Katherine Langford head here—and I will definitely be picking up this issue. The magazine stack grows ever higher.
